Family Law is a broad area of the practice of law and
requires the practitioner to be knowledgeable in not only the areas of
Divorce, Child Support, or Adoption, but also other general areas of
law, such as Property Law, Criminal Law, or Estate Law. By its
very nature, the family unit touches all of these areas of law and that
is just the beginning.
As such, when considering which attorney to hire to
represent you in any family law matter, you need to consider several
factors. First, the attorney's expertise in all of the above
areas. In my career as a general practitioner, I have handled
cases in almost every field of the law, including Property Law, Criminal
Law, and Estate Law, as well as litigating various complex civil
matters.
Second, you need to consider whether the attorney's
goals will match your own. As is discussed specifically in the
divorce section of this page, I find that clients are often emotionally
charged and want to inflict as much hurt on the other party as they can.
Other times, the client wants to make a "peaceful separation". You
need to be sure that the attorney you hire is able to meet those needs.
A "high conflict" attorney is not going to be appropriate for a
"peaceful separation" and in fact may change an otherwise equitable
split into a highly contested and overly litigious matter. My
approach here is to be and advocate for my client and to do everything I
can to achieve their goals.
Family Law is not always a contentious matter.
Family Law is not limited to divorce. It
also includes adoption or guardianships of
children. Family Law also encompasses issues such as
child support collection or
representation before the Department of Human Services. These
matters are normally addressed in a non-confrontational matter.
